meets this planet happy criteria: we love this company because: The Small Plum line was released in 2008 by husband and wife team Katie and Troy Klith. The line was created for parents and gift givers looking for fun baby and toddler apparel that is also eco-friendly, soft and stylish. Unlike cotton and most other crops, bamboo requires no irrigation. According the United Nations, the material for one cotton t-shirt can require 2,500 liters of water. Organic cotton is even thirstier than conventional cotton, although organic farmers are actively working to reduce the water requirements. Land usage for food and other crops is under enormous pressure by the earth's six billion people. Bamboo grows very densely and yields up to 60 tons per hectare compared to the low 1-2 tons per hectare yield of organic and conventional cotton. With respect to harvesting, bamboo can be continually re-harvested with no damage to the surrounding environment. As a grass, bamboo regenerates after being cut in much the same way as a mown lawn. There is no need for replanting, and the cane is ready to harvest again in as little as one year. Bamboo is helping in the fight against global warming through rapid CO2 sequestration. One hectare of bamboo sequesters 62 tons of carbon dioxide per year. This is especially significant when compared to the 15 tons per year carbon sequestration of a young forest. More significantly, bamboo does not require fertilizer of any kind. Fertilizers release greenhouse gases primarily in the form of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. The fertilizer life-cycle generates an estimated 2-3% of the earth's total greenhouse gas emissions. Even organic fertilizers (manure and compost), which are used to grow crops like organic cotton, have a large carbon footprint. Basically, bamboo rules!
